Funding For Babies in Jeopardy - Will You Help?

An Urgent Message from the President of March of Dimes! Read on to find out how you can help...

Dear friend,

The March of Dimes means hope for all babies. And we are making progress — the rate of premature birth declined in 2007 for the first time in many years.

But in 2009, we face great challenges in continuing to fund our lifesaving research and programs. I am sorry to bring bad news, but I must tell you that even though tens of thousands of people have signed up for March for Babies, our fundraising is down by 15 percent. That means we cannot support babies and families as strongly as we did just last year.

Recently, we made the difficult decision to cut $3 million in research grants — funding that was urgently needed to develop new treatments for babies born too soon or with birth defects. We planned to bring NICU Family Support® to 20 new hospitals in 2009. Now, I fear we won't meet this goal. This program, which provides much-needed information and comfort to parents with a baby in newborn intensive care, is now in jeopardy.

I am writing to you today to ask you to help restore hope to the millions of families who look to us for information, leadership and scientific breakthroughs that improve the health of babies.

It does not take much. If every walker raises just $50 more, we can continue to help the babies and families who depend on us. Will you be one of them?

The March of Dimes means hope for all babies. Thank you for not letting them down.

With gratitude,
Dr. Jennifer L. Howse

Please support me in the March For Babies!
Ways you can help:

Unperfect Angel

I have met a most inspiring woman this week! Her name is Erika Bogan, a 27 year old paraplegic. If you think you are having a bad day then read her story: http://lilunperfectangel.webs.com/index.htm Her positive affirmations and enthusiasm will lift your spirits!

She shares her story so that she can help others realize that hope and healing is possible. She happened to be my 600th follower on Twitter this week. After reading her profile and her blog, I decided that we should partner together and preserve her story. Erika and I spoke on the phone today and she is super excited about starting a Heritage Makers storybook!

We will keep you posted on Erika's progress with her book. When she is finished we will post the preview on our blogs. Thank you again for reading her story. Feel free to pass it on...

Peace to all,
Betty

Clay Balls
~Author Unknown~
A man was exploring caves by the seashore.. In one of the caves he found a canvas bag with a bunch of hardened clay balls. It was like someone had rolled clay balls and left them out in the sun to bake.

They didn't look like much, but they intrigued the man, so he took the bag out of the cave with him. As he strolled along the beach, he would throw
the clay balls one at a time out into the ocean as far as he could.

He thought little about it, until he dropped one of the clay balls and it cracked open on a rock. Inside was a beautiful, precious stone!

Excited, the man started breaking open the remaining clay balls. Each contained a similar treasure. He found thousands of dollars worth of jewels in the 20 or so clay balls he had left. Then it struck him.

He had been on the beach a long time. He had thrown maybe 50 or 60 of the clay balls with their hidden treasure into the ocean waves. Instead of
thousands of dollars in treasure, he could have taken home tens of thousands, but he had just thrown it away!

It's like that with people. We look at someone, maybe even ourselves, and we see the external clay vessel. It doesn't look like much from the outside. It isn't always beautiful or sparkling, so we discount it.

We see that person as less important than someone more beautiful or stylish or well known or wealthy But we have not taken the time to find the treasure hidden inside that person.

There is a treasure in each one of us. If we take the time to get to know that person, and if we ask God to show us that person the way He sees them, then the clay begins to peel away and the brilliant gem begins to shine forth.

May we not come to the end of our lives and find out that we have thrown away a fortune in friendships because the gems were hidden in bits of clay. May we see the people in our world as God sees them.

March of Dimes Fundraiser

Dear Friends and Family,
In memory of my son Baby Brian and in honor of my son, Joey, I am supporting the March of Dimes by participating in the March for Babies on April 25th, 2009 in Roswell, GA. Volunteers like you and me help raise funds that support lifesaving research to prevent premature births and infant mortality. Now in its 34th year, March for Babies gives moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas, family members and friends the opportunity to help the March of Dimes fight prematurity.

Premature birth is the leading cause of newborn death in the first month of life. It's on the rise - up 27% since 1981. And it can happen to any pregnant woman. In nearly half the cases, the causes are unknown. The March of Dimes is leading the way to find answers by supporting research into the causes of premature birth.
You and a friend are invited to a Heritage Makers Workshop/March of Dimes Fundraiser! Last year we raised well over $500. Let's top that this year! Come, enjoy some snacks and learn how to create your very own storybooks, greeting cards/playing cards, calendars, etc. using your very own photos and stories. You will love the new concept of storybooking and what great gifts for Mother's Day and Father's Day! Help us raise money for March of Dimes. Proceeds will go directly to our March of Dimes team with Northside Hospital.

Teacher Appreciation Gifts

Now that the teachers have been presented their gifts for Teacher Appreciation I can share this idea! My son's preschool requested each class create a recipe book for their teachers. All the moms in the class sent me a photo of their child and a favorite family recipe. The teachers absolutely LOVED the books and it is a wonderful keepsake for them that will last forever.
Thanks for looking! Let me know how I can help you create a memorable recipe book for your child's teachers. ~ Betty

Sitting On Your Talent
~ Steve Goodier ~

If you are like me, there are some things you may feel you do pretty well, and others that you would not admit to having done even at gunpoint! Please don't expect anything I build with my hands to remain standing past sundown, or anything I attempt to repair to ever stay fixed after I leave the room. And if my cars relied solely on me to keep them going, I would walk most everywhere I go.

On the other hand, I do play guitar adequately and I can make a memorable enchilada dish. I also enjoy working with people and I seem to have made it a lifelong project to learn how to become a better listener.

I never thought of myself as one who has any great talent, but like each of us, I have certain skills and abilities. Let me tell you a story, however, I once heard speaker Les Brown relate. It's a story about a man who had real talent.

This particular man played piano in a bar. He was a good piano player. People came out just to hear him and his combo play. But one night, a patron wanted them to sing a particular song. The trio didn't sing much and declined.

But the customer was persistent. He told the bartender, "I'm tired of listening to the piano. I want that guy to sing!"

The bartender shouted across the room, "Hey buddy! If you want to get paid, sing the song. The patrons are asking you to sing!"

So he did. He sang a song. A jazz piano player who had never sung the song in public did so for the very first time. And nobody had ever heard Sweet Lorraine sung the way it was sung that night by Nat King Cole.

He had talent he was sitting on. He may have lived the rest of his life playing in a jazz trio in no-name bars, but because he had to sing, he went on to become one of the best-known entertainers in
America.

You, too, have skills and abilities. You may not feel as if your "talent" is particularly great, but it may be better than you think! And with persistence, most skills can be improved. Besides, you may as well have no ability at all if you sit on whatever talent you possess.

Some people ask, "What ability do I have that is useful?" But the better question is: "How will I use the ability that I have?"
